Polls find most Republicans say 2020 election was stolen and roughly one-quarter embrace QAnon conspiracies.
"Yo Mama is so stupid that..."
"How stupid is she?"
"She believes that "the government, media, and financial worlds in the U.S. are controlled by a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles who run a global child sex trafficking operation."
Hilarious. Tragic. And it will lead to more violence. "More than 4 in 10 Republicans say they agree that 'because things have gotten so far off track, true American patriots may have to resort to violence in order to save our country.'"
...So one-quarter of all Republicans believe Qanon's ludicrous claims? That's a lot of probability-challenged Americans. People who can't tell the improbable from the likely. You could probably come up to them at the supermarket and if you were earnest enough and had a MAGA hat on, convince them that the cashier is a reptoid alien and their own underwear has been rigged with mind control devices. Why not? It's no more improbable than the other crapola they believe. There is such a thing as The Will to Believe Bullshit. And a surprising number of people succumb to it.
It's hard to understand how it got started. But apparently Qanon is something like a cognitive roach motel. It seems somehow weirdly attractive to gullible anxious conservatives, and once you go toward the attraction you're stuck in the gluey psychology of it and you're doomed to stay there. People allow their marriages to fall apart for the sake of Qanon. They sometimes lose custody of their children. That's how important it becomes to them.
A corollary is the widespread belief in GOP voters that the 2020 President election was stolen. They were so sure they could steal it themselves, with gerrymandering and voter suppression and billions of dollars in dishonest ads, they couldn't believe all those people actually rose up and said, screw this lunacy--and voted for Biden. But that's exactly what the American people did. A majority of voters found ways to get their actual vote counted, and Biden was elected. Scores of lawsuits trying to overturn the results failed to find any evidence of voter fraud. Audits and audits and audits were held. Nothing. And yet they believe. Why? They've been prompted by extremist radio and fake-news sources like QAN to discard the probable for the agreeably bigoted.
